Rosanna's Housing Stock and Why It Matters
Rosanna's residential streets were largely established in the 1950s and 1960s, making it one of the earlier-settled suburbs in the Banyule corridor. The housing stock reflects that period: predominantly brick veneer and weatherboard homes on modest blocks, many of which have never had their electrical system meaningfully updated. Ceramic fuse boards were the standard at the time of construction and a significant proportion remain in place today, sometimes alongside original wiring that was designed for a fraction of the load a modern household puts through it.
What makes Rosanna worth paying attention to is the degree of renovation activity in the area over the past decade. Knockdown-rebuilds, second-storey additions, and kitchen and bathroom renovations are common, and all of them put additional demand on electrical systems that were never designed to cope with it. A renovated home with a new kitchen, multiple split systems and a planned EV charger is asking a 1960s fuse board to do a job it simply cannot do safely.
Rosanna also borders Heidelberg, Macleod and Viewbank, and we regularly work across all of these suburbs, so the area is well within our core service territory.
Signs You Need a Switchboard Upgrade
Your switchboard still has ceramic fuses or rewirable fuse wire rather than circuit breakers
Circuits trip regularly or fuses blow without an obvious cause
You're adding an EV charger, solar system, air conditioner, or any high-draw appliance
Your home has been renovated, extended, or had a second storey added without a corresponding electrical upgrade
You're buying or selling a property and want the electrical system properly assessed
If any of these sound familiar, an assessment is worth booking before it becomes a bigger problem.
Not sure if your switchboard needs attention? We'll assess it at no charge and give you a clear answer before any work is discussed.

Most Rosanna switchboard upgrades involve full replacement of an old ceramic fuse board with a modern switchboard fitted with individual RCBOs on every circuit, tested and labelled, usually completed in a single visit. For the full breakdown of every service we offer, including three-phase upgrades, consumer mains work, sub-boards, and surge protection, along with detailed pricing and our step-by-step process, see our complete Switchboard Upgrades page. Older Rosanna properties, particularly those built in the 1950s and 60s, sometimes have undersized consumer mains, typically 40A or 60A service lines that were sufficient for the era but aren't suited to modern loads like EV chargers, ducted heating, or solar inverters. This is especially relevant in homes that have been significantly renovated without anyone having assessed the mains capacity. Where a mains upgrade is needed, we identify this during assessment and include it in your written quote before any work begins. Most Rosanna upgrades are done in a single visit. Written quote before we start, no variations on the day.

We know Rosanna homes
Rosanna's housing stock is predominantly 1950s and 60s construction, and we're familiar with what that means in practice: ceramic fuse boards, original wiring, and mains cabling that often hasn't been assessed since the home was built. We're also used to working on renovated properties in the area where the visible finish is modern but the electrical infrastructure underneath it isn't. We assess what's actually in front of us rather than assuming a standard layout.

Switchboard Upgrade FAQs for Rosanna
-
Yes. Much of Rosanna was built in the 1950s and 60s, when ceramic fuse boards were standard. These boards don't trip automatically under fault conditions and are generally not adequate for the electrical loads a modern household places on them.
-
Often, yes. Renovations regularly increase the electrical load on a property without anyone assessing whether the existing switchboard can handle it safely. A modern kitchen alone, with an induction cooktop, dishwasher and rangehood, can push an older board beyond what it was designed for. If your home has had significant work done without a switchboard assessment, it's worth getting one.
-
Not always. If your existing consumer mains are adequate, a switchboard upgrade is a standalone job. On older Rosanna properties, particularly those still on a 40A or 60A service line, the mains often need upgrading at the same time to safely support a modern switchboard and today's household loads. We check this as part of every assessment and include any mains work in your written quote before we start.
-
They refer to the same job. A fuse board or fuse box is the older style of switchboard, typically fitted with ceramic fuses or rewirable fuse wire rather than circuit breakers and safety switches. Replacing it with a modern switchboard fitted with RCBOs gives you automatic fault protection on every circuit. The terms are used interchangeably and we handle both.
-
Most residential upgrades fall between $800 and $2,200, depending on circuit count and whether mains work is involved. See our full switchboard upgrade pricing for detailed ranges, or call 1300 215 193 for a written quote.
-
Sometimes, yes. If your existing switchboard is in reasonable condition and has the capacity, we may be able to retrofit safety switches without a full replacement. However, many older Rosanna boards are ceramic or in poor enough condition that retrofitting isn't practical or safe, and full replacement is the better option. We'll give you an honest assessment on site before recommending anything.
-
Not always. If your existing mains are adequate for your current and planned loads, a switchboard replacement is a standalone job. On older Rosanna properties, particularly those that haven't had the mains assessed since original construction, an upgrade is sometimes needed, especially if you're adding an EV charger, solar inverter or additional circuits. We assess the mains as part of every switchboard quote and include any required work upfront.
-
Most upgrades are completed in a single visit. Your power will be off for most of that time, but we aim to keep that window as short as possible. Where mains work is also required, we'll give you a clear timeframe in your written quote.
