Powerpoint Work We Handle
Types of Powerpoints We Install
Single powerpoint. One socket for a single appliance. Still the right choice in some locations, such as behind a fridge or dishwasher.
Double powerpoint. Two switched sockets in one fitting. The standard for most rooms, and the most common conversion we do from older single outlets.
Double powerpoint with USB. Two sockets plus built-in USB-A and USB-C ports, so phones and tablets charge without occupying a socket.
Double powerpoint with extra switch. A third switch on the plate, typically used to control a nearby fixed appliance such as a rangehood or garbage disposal.
Weatherproof powerpoint. Sealed, IP-rated outlets for outdoor and damp areas, installed to the standards that apply to external circuits.
Smart powerpoint. Outlets that can be switched, scheduled or monitored from a phone app or by voice. We advise on which systems are reliable and which are not worth the money.
We install quality switchgear from established brands, including the Clipsal Iconic and Classic ranges, and can match new fittings to the existing style of your home or specify something different for a renovation.
When a Powerpoint Should Be Replaced
Powerpoints wear out. Replace yours if you notice any of the following:
Cracked or broken faceplates, which can expose live parts
Scorch marks, discolouration or a burning smell
Plugs that sit loosely or fall out of the socket
Outlets that feel warm in use
Switches that no longer click firmly on or off
A failing powerpoint is one of the more common causes of household electrical fires, and replacement is a quick, inexpensive job. Every residential visit also includes a free visual safety inspection, so if there are other issues nearby, you will know about them before they become problems.
What our Clients Say
Powerpoints in Older North East Homes
Much of the housing across Eltham, Montmorency, Heidelberg, Ivanhoe and Greensborough dates from the 1950s to the 1980s, when homes were built with a fraction of the outlets a household needs now. The result is familiar: powerboards stacked behind the TV, extension leads run under rugs, and double adaptors in every room.
Adding powerpoints to these homes is rarely just a matter of cutting a hole in the wall. Older circuits may already be near capacity, wiring may be degraded, and some homes still have switchboards without safety switches. We assess the circuit and the switchboard before quoting, so the work is done once and done properly. Where new circuits are required under current wiring rules, they are protected by an RCD, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for all prescribed work.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
It depends on the type of powerpoint, the wall construction, how far cabling needs to run, and whether the circuit can take the additional load. Replacing an existing powerpoint costs less than installing a new one in a new position. We provide a written quote before work begins, and the price does not change once work is underway.
-
Yes. We run new cabling through walls, ceilings or underfloor spaces to position powerpoints where you need them. Brick veneer, double brick and weatherboard homes each require a different approach, and we work with all three regularly across the north east.
-
There is no fixed maximum under Australian wiring rules. What matters is the expected load on the circuit and the rating of its protection. Before adding outlets, we check what the circuit already carries and whether it can safely take more. If it cannot, we will tell you, and quote a new circuit instead.
-
Yes. Current wiring rules require new powerpoint circuits to be RCD protected. If your switchboard has no safety switches, which is common in older north east homes, we will explain what is involved in bringing it up to standard before any work proceeds.
-
In the right locations, yes. Beside beds, in kitchens and at desks they remove the need for plug-in chargers and keep both sockets free. We fit models with both USB-A and USB-C, so they stay useful as devices change.
-
Outdoor outlets must be weatherproof, appropriately IP-rated for their position, and RCD protected. We install them on decks, pergolas, external walls and in garden sheds, with cabling run and sealed to suit the conditions.
-
Yes. Relocations are common during kitchen and living area renovations and after wall removals. We coordinate with your builder where needed and make sure the final positions match how the space will be used.
