Signs You Have an Electrical Fault
Electrical faults rarely announce themselves clearly. More often, they show up as small inconveniences that get reset, reset again, and eventually accepted as normal. None of the following are normal, and all of them are worth having looked at.
Common signs of an underlying fault include:
A safety switch (RCD) that trips repeatedly, especially if it always seems to be the same one
A specific circuit or breaker that trips when certain appliances are used
Lights that flicker or dim briefly when something else switches on, such as the air conditioner or oven
Powerpoints or switches that feel warm, look discoloured, or make a buzzing or crackling sound
A burning smell with no obvious source, particularly near the switchboard
Parts of the house that lose power intermittently for no obvious reason
If a safety switch trips, it has done its job by cutting power before something worse happened. Resetting it without finding out why is the equivalent of ignoring a warning light on a car dashboard. We carry out systematic fault finding to identify the actual cause, whether that is a faulty appliance, a failing connection, degraded insulation, or a wiring fault, and fix it properly.
Fault Finding Work We Handle
A fault can come from almost anywhere in a property's electrical system. The six categories below cover the situations we are called out for most often across the north east.
Why Fault Finding Matters
A fault that trips a safety switch is, in one sense, a good outcome. The safety switch has detected current going somewhere it should not and cut the power before anything worse happened. The problem is what comes next. Resetting the switch and moving on does not fix whatever caused it to trip in the first place, and that underlying cause is often something that gets worse over time rather than better.
Loose connections heat up under load and gradually degrade further with every cycle. Insulation that has been nicked, chewed, or simply aged past its design life continues to deteriorate. A circuit that is overloaded during certain times of day will keep being overloaded until either the load changes or the circuit is upgraded. None of these resolve themselves.
Systematic fault finding means testing methodically until the actual cause is identified, rather than replacing parts on a guess and hoping the problem does not return. Once the cause is confirmed, we provide a written quote for the repair before any work begins.
Fault Finding in Older North East Homes
Homes across Eltham, Montmorency, Greensborough, Ivanhoe, Heidelberg and the surrounding suburbs span a wide range of ages, and the wiring inside them reflects that. Many older properties have been extended or renovated multiple times over several decades, often with new circuits added onto an existing switchboard without much consideration for how the original circuits were laid out. The result can be switchboards with poorly labelled circuits, shared circuits carrying more than they were designed for, and a mix of cable types and ages behind the walls.
This makes fault finding in these homes more involved than in a newer, single-build property, but it is exactly the kind of work we do regularly across the area. We approach it methodically: confirming what each circuit actually carries, checking the condition of older wiring where it is accessible, and testing rather than guessing. Where a switchboard has never been properly labelled, we label it as part of the visit so future fault finding, for you or anyone else, is faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
A safety switch trips when it detects current leaking to earth somewhere it should not. Common causes include a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor circuit, or a deteriorating connection within the wiring. We test each circuit individually to isolate where the leakage is coming from, then repair the cause rather than simply resetting the switch.
-
Flickering can be caused by a loose connection at the switch, fitting, or switchboard, a shared neutral affected by another circuit, or in some cases a fault on the supply side. We trace the circuit systematically to find which of these applies in your case.
-
In most cases, yes. We use testing equipment and, where relevant, thermal imaging and cable fault location tools to narrow down the likely location before any opening up is needed. This keeps disruption to a minimum and means any access required is targeted rather than exploratory.
-
The initial visit covers diagnosis, working through your circuits methodically until the cause is identified. If repair work is required, we provide a written quote for that work before it begins. The price does not change once work is underway.
-
We are not a 24-hour emergency service, but fault callouts are prioritised in our scheduling. If you call describing the issue, we will give you a realistic timeframe and let you know if it is something that needs to be looked at urgently.
-
Yes. Loose connections and degraded insulation generate heat, and that heat increases under load. This is part of why repeated safety switch trips or warm powerpoints should not be ignored or simply reset. Identifying and fixing the underlying fault removes that risk.
-
Yes. We can carry out an assessment of a property's electrical system and provide a written summary of any issues found, useful for buyers wanting to understand the condition of the electrical installation before settlement.
-
Yes. A Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued for all prescribed electrical work carried out as part of a repair, as required in Victoria.
