Halogen to LED Conversion
Most homes built or fitted out through the 1990s and 2000s have halogen downlights, and by now those fittings are well past their useful life. Halogen globes draw significantly more power than LED for the same light output, and they run hot enough to be a genuine fire risk where insulation has been pushed too close to the fitting. The transformers that step down the voltage for these fittings are usually the first component to fail, and once one starts going, the rest tend to follow within a year or two.
Converting to LED removes the transformer altogether in most cases, since LED downlights run directly off mains voltage. The fittings run cool, draw a fraction of the power, and last considerably longer. If your home has dimmers, these often need to be replaced as part of the conversion, since older dimmers are built for the higher load of halogen and do not work correctly with LED, causing flickering or a limited dimming range. We check this as part of any quote so there are no surprises once the new downlights are in.
Lighting for Renovations and New Builds
Lighting layout is one of the easier things to get wrong in a renovation, because it has to be locked in before the ceiling goes up, well before you can stand in the finished room and see how it actually feels. We work through layout at the framing stage, positioning downlights, pendants and feature lighting around how each room will actually be used, not just on a grid.
This is also the point to plan for dimming, zoning, and any smart lighting control, since running the right cabling now is far simpler than retrofitting later. If you are working with a builder or designer, we can coordinate directly with them on timing and layout. For the full scope of an electrical fit-out during a renovation or new build, see our renovations and new builds page.

Your Questions, Answered
-
It depends on the room size, ceiling height, and what the space is used for. As a general guide, downlights are spaced roughly 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart and from walls, but task areas like kitchen benches often need additional fittings. We work this out as part of the quote based on the actual room.
-
Yes, this is one of the most common jobs we do. In most cases the old transformers come out entirely, since LED downlights run directly off mains voltage. If your home has dimmers, we check whether they need replacing at the same time.
-
Often, yes. Older dimmers are built for the higher load of halogen and do not work correctly with LED, which can cause flickering, buzzing, or a limited dimming range. We confirm dimmer compatibility before installing new downlights and replace them where needed.

Warm white (around 2700 to 3000 Kelvin) gives a softer, yellow-toned light suited to living areas and bedrooms. Cool white (4000 Kelvin and above) is brighter and more blue-toned, often used in kitchens, bathrooms and garages. We can talk through what suits each room when we quote.
-
In many cases, yes. Smart switches can replace existing wall switches without major rewiring, and smart globes work with the existing wiring as is. Whole-home smart lighting systems generally need more planning, particularly during a renovation when walls are open.
-
Outdoor circuits need RCD protection and appropriately rated, weatherproof fittings and connections. Whether they sit on a dedicated circuit depends on your switchboard and existing circuits, which we assess as part of the quote.
-
Quality LED downlights are typically rated for 25,000 to 50,000 hours, which works out to many years of normal household use. They also run much cooler than halogen, which reduces the fire risk associated with downlights sitting close to ceiling insulation.

Yes. A Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued for all prescribed electrical work, including lighting installation and circuit alterations, as required in Victoria.
